"The effort you go to is so visible in the events you organise and the everyday activities you do. Mostly, it is watching the children run into nursery that shows what a wonderful job you are doing."

Policy on Fire

In the event of a fire, do not attempt to put it out yourself.  Ensure the safety of the children in your care and yourself by collecting the children together and leaving by the nearest fire exit.

Fire drill will take place every half term. This will be taking place without notifying staff in advance.  All staff will be told that this will happen half termly and no further warning will be given.

Fire extinguishers are tested by a properly authorised firm once a year and all fire exits will be kept in good repair.

The water fire extinguishers are situated in the downstairs hall and top landing and the blanket extinguishers is in the kitchen.

All members of staff are aware of the location of fire exits.

Near each fire exit there is a notice explaining the fire procedures.

Procedure to be followed in the event of a fire drill / a fire

On hearing the fire alarm the children in each room will be collected together and taken out of the nearest fire exit to the assembly point which is located in car park.

One member of staff from upstairs will collect children’s, staff’s and visitors’ registers, “zapper” for the gate and front door key.  One member of the staff from downstairs will collect the children’s register and a mobile phone before going outside.  Once outside the children will line up and the register will be taken.

In the event of real fire, the member of staff in charge that day will call the emergency services (999), using a mobile phone, once she has evacuated the building.  If the member of staff does not have a mobile and nor does any other members of staff, a member of staff will be despatched to the nearest building to use the phone there or to the nearest call box.

Only the member of staff in charge can decide if and when it is safe to re-enter the building.  This must be done in liaison with the emergency services.

Where it is not possible to return to the building the children will be taken to “safe premises”, to be kept warm and dry and to await collection by their parents.

The officer in charge will inform the authorised collectors that the children can be collected from this “safe premises”.
